Meeting Information
From November 3–7, 2025, Geneva, Switzerland, will host the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP-6). The Conference of the Parties chose Osvaldo Álvarez (Chile) to be the President of COP-6 during COP-5.

Mercury Trade and Supply Decisions’ Implementation (2024)
With assistance from Spain and the EU, the Secretariat is developing guidelines to help Parties identify, control, and minimize the trade in mercury from primary mining. arranging webinars and developing materials (in collaboration with partners such as the World Customs Organization, InforMEA, and the UN System Staff College) to enhance comprehension of trade provisions and associated articles of the Convention.
To update recommendations on mercury stocks (decision MC-1/2) to include activities that meet the requirement to identify stocks and sources, the Secretariat is also soliciting funding.COP-5 requests that Parties submit their experiences and difficulties implementing Article 3 and the measures taken under the Bali Declaration on the illegal mercury trade by March 25, 2025, under Decision MC-5/2 (Mercury Supply Sources and Trade).

Decision MC-5/3 (Mercury Compounds Study):
COP-5 requested a study on the global supply, production, trade, and use of mercury compounds. A draft report has been developed with support from Canada and Spain.

Annexes A and B (products and processes)
Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production (Decision MC-5/6)
According to paragraphs 8 of Article 5 and 1 of Article 17 of the Convention, Parties and pertinent organizations were asked to voluntarily submit information by March 31, 2025, on technically and financially viable alternatives to the use of mercury and mercury compounds in the production of vinyl chloride monomers. The information that was submitted is shown below. The deadline for submissions has been moved to April 30, 2025. The Secretariat will wait until May 14, 2025, as it has been notified that additional submissions from parties are anticipated.

Cosmetics (Decision MC-5/5)
The Executive Secretary invited Parties and observers to submit information by June 30, 2024, following the submission format in a letter. The received submissions are now available here. The contributed data has been compiled and synthesized into a draft report, which can be found here along with Annex 1 (an Excel table). By Monday, April 28, 2025, parties and pertinent stakeholders are encouraged to evaluate and provide feedback on the draft using this comment form.
Mercury waste
By October 31, 2024, parties are asked to provide information about their waste management policies and initiatives as outlined in Article 11(3)(a), with an emphasis on issues not covered by the Basel Convention’s technical guidelines on the environmentally sound management of wastes that contain, contain, or are contaminated with mercury or mercury compounds. The contributions listed below have been received. The information must be gathered, arranged, and made public by the Secretariat by January 1, 2025.
